Join us is saving Sigula Island by planting trees

A Community Tree Planting Campaign to Restore and Protect the Environment, Sigulu Island is a community with rich biodiversity around Lake Victoria in Namayingo District, Uganda.

However, in recent years, the island has faced a growing environmental crisis.

The loss of tree cover has exposed soils to severe soil erosion and flooding during rainy seasons, endangering households, crops, and infrastructure. Recognizing this urgent threat, Ojulu Island Saviours Foundation (OISF) is launching 55,000 tree planting across Sigulu Island Communities in July 2025. This ambitious effort is built on a successful pilot, where 1,000 trees were planted in two villages. The overwhelming support and feedback from locals who experienced the impact of erosion and climate change made it clear that the island needs more trees, and it needs them now.

Tree planting is a vital solution to combat soil degradation, protect water sources, improve air quality, and strengthen the island’s natural defenses. This reforestation drive will target villages, public areas, and schools, transforming them into green spaces that offer long term environmental, social, and economic benefits. With the leadership of OISF, Sigulu’s residents are taking ownership of their
environment and future, demonstrating the power of grassroots climate action.

End Period Poverty in Classrooms - A Silent Crisis

Beyond the environment, OISF is also addressing a deeply personal and often overlooked challenge which is menstrual hygiene and school dropout rates among girls.

Many girls in Sigulu Island miss school or drop out entirely, leading to early marriages, stigma, and low self-esteem. 6 in 10 schoolgirls on Sigulu Island lack access to sanitary pads due to limited availability and lack of affordability.

An estimated 1 in 3 girls drops out of school on the island before completing Secondary education, with menstrual challenges being a contributing factor.

Girls without access to pads may miss up to 4 days of school each month, which adds up to up to 40 days a year, nearly 20% of the academic year. In some schools on Sigulu Island, absenteeism among girls increases by 25–30% during their menstruation period as a result of inability to afford these pads.

Over 60% of girls report feeling uncomfortable attending school during their periods due to lack of menstrual products, stigma, inadequate sanitation facilities, and limited knowledge.

Through our new initiative, OISF is working with two schools to distribute 4,500 eco-friendly sanitary pad packs, enough to support girls throughout the year. But we need your help.
We call upon feminists, compassionate individuals, organizations, and corporate partners to support this cause with any number of sanitary pads which will directly keep girls in school, with dignity and confidence.
